Obituary for Margaret Sager

Margaret Anna Sager (1918-2016) died on February 17th at the age of 97, with her children around her. Margaret was born on the Schwem family farm in West Charlton. She was the youngest of three daughters, and was predeceased by her sisters Janet and Ruth. Margaret was a loving wife, mother and professional. She was a dedicated Public Health Nurse and pioneer in the Nursing Profession. She graduated from Skidmore College with a BS in Nursing, in 1940. Margaret worked as a Rural Pubilic Health Nurse in Saratoga County. In 1948, she graduated from Columbia University with a Master's Degree in Public Health Education. Margaret was member of the Medical Alliance of Schenectady and the Advisory Board for the Visiting Nurse Service Association.

Margaret married Dr. Virgil Sager in 1950 at the First Reformed Church of Schenectady. Margaret assisted her husband as both nurse and office manager in his surgical practice until his early death, in 1974. Margaret returned to work for the State in the Health Department in Albany.
She played a critical role in establishing a new long term home health care program with the goal of helping people to stay in their homes. She officially retired in 1984. In her retirement, Margaret played bridge, traveled, and avidly quilted with friends.

Margaret is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Peggy, Anneke and Virgil are blessed to have been raised by two loving parents, and to have had their mother in their lives for so many years.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday June 4, 2016 at 1 PM at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4 Northcrest Drive, Clifton Park, New York 12065. Burial was in Viewland Cemetery, Rotterdam.

If wished, gifts may be made in her memory to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clifton Park, Community Hospice of Albany, or charity of your choice.
